Shasta Anesthesia Consultants is not currently recruiting any Anesthesiologists. Our
recruitment usually begins 9 months before an anticipated need. We welcome inquiries and will
correspond with interested physicians. Our practice is growing with the community and we are
anticipating a retirement in the next year or two. The practice includes Obstetric, Cardiac,
General, Trauma, Ophthalmologic, and Outpatient anesthesia. Our primary hospital is Mercy
Medical Center, Redding. We also work at Apogee Surgery Center, Riverside Surg. Center (eyes),
Center for Sight (eyes), Redding Surgery Center (plastic/gen/gyn/ENT), and Mercy Surgery
Center (ENT, GU, Ortho, Gen). Every doc is required to do OB and Mercy Main OR. Only 5 docs
really want to do Cardiac. Physicians practice in the surgery centers based on their preferences.
For example: everyone likes Plastics but only half the docs work in the Opthalmology surgery
centers. Outpatient Anesthesia is approximately 45% of our daily assignments. Call is shared
equally however since it is a stipended position physicians have the option of serving a little
more or less call. Next day after call is guaranteed off. The main OR tends to be pretty busy.
The Surgery centers tend to end mid afternoon.
The practice is managed democratically with a productivity based, insurance blind compensation
system. New physicians are immediately treated as equals with regard to call schedule, income,
vacations etc. Physician take between 8-12 weeks vacation per year. The practice is structured
as a corporation. All physicians are employees of the corporation. New physicians Immediately
become shareholders in the corporation as well as employees. There is no "buy in". Shareholder
status allows one to vote on management issues. Retirements are individually managed and
funded maximally as allowed by law (~$45,000 per year). There is no vesting. The money
immediately belongs to the physician.
Shasta Anesthesia Consultants tends to appeal to physicians who desire a challenging tertiary
care practice in a resort environment. Redding California offers a full spectrum of outdoor
activities including boating, horseback riding, fly-fishing, hunting, mountain biking, snow
skiing (or boarding), water skiing and wilderness hiking. The Pacific Ocean, Lake Tahoe, San
Francisco, and Reno are all easy 3-4 hour drives away. The weather is essentially 3 season
with a long hot summer and temperate fall and spring.
Redding is an excellent place to raise a family. In addition to the abundant outdoor activities
there are good schools and extensive extracurricular activities including school sports, club
sports, music, dance, drama, and scouting. Kids matriculate at Ivy Leagues, Military
Academies, and the UC's routinely. Several of the physicians in Redding are natives who have
returned to the area to practice..
Redding shares a symphony with Chico, has theater groups, and enjoys 6 travelling Broadway
plays per year. Shasta College is a 2-year junior college that offers college prep as well a
general interest studies. Simpson College is a small liberal arts college with approximately
1200 students. The airport offers commuter service to Portland, San Francisco, and Los
Angeles
The cost of living is low by California standards. Unfortunately it is slightly higher than
national averages.
